दस महाविद्या अर्थात दस शक्तियों में से एक धूमावती सप्तम महाविद्या हैं। धूमावती अर्थात जिसका जन्म धुएं से हुआ हो। माता का यह रूप धुएं के समान होता है। धुएं से उत्पन्न होने के कारण ही उन्हें भगवान शिव के द्वारा धूमावती नाम दिया गया है। धूमावती के कुछ अन्य नाम ज्येष्ठा, अलक्ष्मी व निरृति हैं। महाविद्याओं की उत्पत्ति और माता धूमावती के प्राकट्य से संबंधित अनेक कथाएं प्रचलित हैं। मान्यतानुसार जब शिवपत्नी सती ने अपने पिता दक्ष के द्वारा आयोजित यज्ञकुंड में स्वेच्छा से स्वयं को जला कर भस्म कर दिया, तो उनके जलते हुए शरीर से जो धुआं निकला, उससे धूमावती का जन्म हुआ। अर्थात धूमावती धुएं के रूप में सती का भौतिक स्वरूप है। सती का जो कुछ बचा रहा- वह उदास धुआं। इसीलिए वे हमेशा उदास रहती हैं। देवीभागवत पुराण के अनुसार महाविद्याओं की उत्पति शिव और पार्वती के पूर्वजन्म सती के मध्य हुई एक विवाद के कारण हुई। कथा के अनुसार शिव और सती के विवाह से सती के पिता दक्ष प्रजापति प्रसन्न नहीं थे।
उन्होंने शिव का अपमान करने के उद्देश्य से एक विशाल यज्ञ का आयोजन किया, जिसमें उन्होंने सभी देवी-देवताओं को आमन्त्रित किया। लेकिन द्वेषवश उन्होंने अपने जामाता भगवान शंकर व पुत्री सती को निमन्त्रित नहीं किया। इस पर भी सती अपने पिता के द्वारा आयोजित यज्ञ में जाने की जिद करने लगीं। जिसे शिव ने अनसुना कर दिया, इस पर सती ने स्वयं को एक भयानक रूप में परिवर्तित कर लिया। पुराणों में इसे महाकाली का अवतार कहा है। देवी के इस भयंकर रूप को देख भगवान शिव भागने को उद्यत हुए। अपने पति को डरा हुआ जानकर सती उन्हें रोकने लगीं। शिव जिस दिशा में गये, उन सभी दिशाओं में सती का भयंकर रूप का एक अन्य विग्रह प्रकट होकर उन्हें रोकता है। इस प्रकार दसों दिशाओं में सती के दस रूप अर्थात विग्रह प्रकट हुए, वे ही दस महाविद्याएँ कहलाईं।
पुराणों अनुसार शिव के इस इंकार पर देवी ने क्रोधवश पहले काली शक्ति प्रकट की, फिर दसों दिशाओं में दस शक्तियां प्रकट कर अपनी शक्ति की झलक दिखलाई और क्रोधवश अपना अंतिम निर्णय सुनाते हुए कहा कि मैं दक्ष के यज्ञ में अवश्य भाग लूंगी, और अपना यज्ञभाग लूंगी अथवा उसका विध्वंस कर दूंगी। इस अति भयंकर दृश्य को देखकर घबराये शिव ने सती के समक्ष आ सती से पूछा- ये सभी कौन हैं? सती ने बताया कि यह मेरे दस रूप हैं। आपके समक्ष खड़ी कृष्ण रंग की काली, आपके ऊपर नीले रंग की तारा, पश्चिम में छिन्नमस्ता, बाएं भुवनेश्वरी, पीठ के पीछे बगलामुखी, पूर्व-दक्षिण में धूमावती, दक्षिण-पश्चिम में त्रिपुर सुंदरी, पश्चिम- उत्तर में मातंगी तथा उत्तर-पूर्व में षोड़शी हैं और मैं स्वयं भैरवी रूप में अभयदान देने के लिए आपके समक्ष खड़ी हूं। यही दस महाविद्या अर्थात दस शक्ति है। बाद में भगवती ने अपनी इन्हीं शक्तियों का उपयोग दैत्यों और राक्षसों का वध करने के लिए नौदुर्गा के शैलपुत्री, ब्रह्मचारिणी, चंद्रघंटा, कुष्मांडा, स्कंदमाता, कात्यायनी, कालरात्रि, महागौरी और सिद्धिदात्री रूपों में किया था।
एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार एक बार अपनी क्षुधा शांत करने के लिए देवी सती भगवान शिव के पास जाती हैं। परन्तु उस समय शिव अपने ध्यान में लीन थे। देवी के बार-बार आग्रह के बाद भी शिव ध्यान से नहीं उठते। उन्होंने सती के आग्रह पर ध्यान नहीं दिया। इससे क्रोधित होकर देवी ने श्वास खींचकर भगवान शिव को निगल गई। शिव के गले में समुद्र मंथन में प्राप्त विष अटका होने के कारण देवी के देह से धुंआ निकलने लगा और उनका स्वरूप विकृत और श्रृंगार विहीन हो गया।
इस कारण उनका नाम धूमावती पड़ गया। विष के प्रभाव से माता का शरीर धीरे-धीरे वृद्ध होता चला गया, जिसमें
जगह-जगह झुर्रियां पड़ गयी। इससे बेचैन होकर पार्वती ने शिव को अपने मुंह से बाहर उगल दिया। बाहर आकर शिव ने पार्वती से कहा कि चूँकि तुम भूख से व्याकुल होकर अपने पति को ही निगल गयी थी, इसलिए तुम्हारे इस रूप को विधवा होने का श्राप मिलेगा। कुछ पुराणों में कतिपय कथाभेद के साथ शिव के आग्रह पर सती द्वारा शिव को बाहर निकालने की बात कही गई है। उसके अनुसार शिव तो स्वयं इस जगत के सर्जक हैं, परिपालक हैं। फिर भी भगवान शिव ने सती से अनुरोध किया कि मुझे बाहर निकालो। तो उन्होंने उगल कर उन्हें बाहर निकाल दिया। निकालने के बाद शिव ने उन्हें शाप दिया कि आज और अभी से तुम विधवा रूप में रहोगी।
कुछ पौराणिक ग्रन्थों के अनुसार एक बार माता पार्वती के मन में यह विचार उत्पन्न हुआ कि विधवा कैसी होती है? यह जानने के लिए उन्होंने भगवान शिव से कहा कि वह वैधव्य को महसूस करना चाहती हैं। देवी पार्वती कि इस कामना को पूरा करने के लिए ही भोलेनाथ ने इस लीला को रचा। जिसमें फंसकर स्वयं माता पार्वती ने शिव को अपना ग्रास बना लिया। जिसके कारण उन्हें यह वैधव्य योग मिला। इसके बाद माता पार्वती के इस रूप को बूढ़ी विधवा का रूप होने की मान्यता मिली, जिसे एक दरिद्र, भूख से व्याकुल व बेचैन स्त्री के रूप में चित्रित किया गया हैं। इस रूप में माता के मुख पर बेचैनी, व्याकुलता, दरिद्रता, संशय, तड़प, थकान इत्यादि एक साथ प्रदर्शित होते हैं।विधवा बूढी स्त्री के रूप में देवी धूमावती के शरीर के अंगों पर जगह-जगह झुर्रियां पड़ चुकी हैं, तथा उनका पूरा शरीर कंपायमान हैं। एकदम शुष्क व सफेद रंग के शरीर वाली धूमावती देवी वस्त्र भी विधवा समान श्वेत ही धारण किये हुए हैं, जो कई जगह से कटे-फटे व घिसे हुए हैं। उनके केश बिखरे हुए हैं और ऐसा लगता हैं जैसे माता कई दिनों से स्नान तक नहीं की हुई हो। इस कारण उनके केश, शरीर व वस्त्रों पर गंदगी जमा हो गयी हैं। भूख से व्याकुल व दरिद्र रूप में उनका शरीर बिल्कुल पतला व अस्वस्थ प्रतीत होता है। वे एक बिना घोड़े के रथ पर बैठी दिख रही हैं, जिसके शीर्ष पर एक कौआ बैठा है। माता के एक हाथ में टोकरी तो दूसरा हाथ अभय मुद्रा में या ज्ञान देने की मुद्रा में है।
कुछ पुराणों में धूमावती का अस्त्र सुप बताया गया है। जीवन साथी धूमवान हैं। धूमावती माता से संबंधित
रुद्रावतार धुमेश्वर महादेव हैं। देवी धूमावती का शक्तिपीठ मध्यप्रदेश राज्य के दतिया जिले में पीतांबर पीठ हैं। धूमावती माता का मंत्र है – ऊँ धूं धूं धूमावती देव्यै स्वाहा:।।
उल्लेखनीय है कि धूमावती विश्व में कलह उत्पन्न करने वाली तथा भूख से व्याकुल माता का रूप है, जिसे अनिष्ट के देवी के रूप में देखा गया है। यह श्रीकुल की सात देवियों में आती हैं। माता सती का सातवाँ रूप माता धूमावती माता के विपरीत गुणों का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं। इसलिए इन्हें अलक्ष्मी या ज्येष्ठा भी कहा जाता हैं। देवी धूमावती एक तरह से माँ देवी के नकारात्मक रूप का साक्षात प्रदर्शन हैं, लेकिन अपने इस रूप से माता अपने भक्तों के कई संकटों को दूर करती हैं।ज्येष्ठ मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की अष्टमी तिथि के दिन शत्रु का संघार करने के लिए माता धूमावती का प्राकट्य हुआ था। इसलिए ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल अष्टमी तिथि के दिन दस महाविद्याओं में से एक माता धूमावती की जयंती मनाई जाती है। इस वर्ष 2023 में ज्येष्ठ शुक्ल अष्टमी तिथि 27 मई सुबह 07 बजकर 42 मिनट से शुरू होगी और इसका अंत 28 मई सुबह 09 बजकर 56 मिनट पर होगा। ऐसे में धूमावती जयंती 28 मई 2023, शनिवार के दिन मनाई जाएगी। माता धूमावती की पूजा करने से मनुष्य के संकटों का हरण होता है। किसी वस्तु का अभाव दूर होता है। देवी धूमावती अपने भक्तों की हर प्रकार की कमी व भूख को शांत करती हैं तथा उन्हें अभय होने का आशीर्वाद प्रदान करती हैं। धूमावती महाविद्या की पूजा मुख्य रूप से गुप्त नवरात्रों में की जाती हैं। दस महाविद्याओं को पूजा के लिए विख्यात गुप्त नवरात्रों में सातवें दिन महाविद्या धूमावती की पूजा करने का विधान है।
उल्लेखनीय है कि सुहागन महिलाएं अपने सुहाग की रक्षा और सौभाग्य की वृद्धि के लिए माता पार्वती की पूजा करती हैं, परन्तु देवी के धूमावती स्वरूप की पूजा करने से सुहागन महिलाएं भयभीत होती हैं। कारण है कि पार्वती अपने इस स्वरूप में एक विधवा के समान नजर आती हैं और माता पार्वती का यह स्वरुप वैधव्य का प्रतीक माना जाता है। सुहागन स्त्री के सुहाग पर वैधव्य का प्रभाव होने के डर से सुहागन महिलाएं माता पार्वती के इस स्वरूप की पूजा नहीं करती। महिलाएं दूर से इनके दर्शन करती हैं। यह देवी दस तांत्रिक देवी का एक समूह है। देवी को बुरी आत्माओं से सुरक्षा करने वाली शक्ति के रूप में भी पूजा जाता है। धूमावती के शक्ति रूप का पृथ्वी पर यह अवतार देवी दुर्गा का सबसे उग्र रूप है।
अत्यंत उग्र स्वरूप वाली होकर भी धूमावती संतान के लिए कल्याणकारी मानी जाती है। इनके दर्शन मात्र से अभीष्ट फल की प्राप्ति होती है। ऋषि दुर्वासा, भृगु, परशुराम आदि की मूल शक्ति धूमावती हैं। इन्होने देवी धूमावती की पूजा अर्चना करके विशेष शक्तियों को प्राप्त किया था। पौराणिक ग्रन्थों में माता धूमावती को एक ऐसे शिक्षक के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है, जो ब्रह्माण्ड को भ्रामक प्रभागों से बचने के लिए प्रेरित करती हैं। उनका बदसूरत रूप भक्त को जीवन की आन्तरिक सच्चाई को तलासने की प्रेरणा देता है। देवी को अलौकिक शक्तियों के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है। उनकी पूजा भी शत्रुओं के विनाश के लिए की जाती है।
