नई दिल्ली। वाइस एडमिरल करमबीर सिंह को नौसेना प्रमुख बनने से पहले ही आर्म्ड फोर्स ट्रिब्यूनल में एडमिरल बिमल वर्मा ने चुनौती दी है। वाइस एडमिरल बिमल वर्मा ने कहा है कि वे करमबीर सिंह से वरिष्ठ हैं। लेकिन उनको प्राथमिकता न देकर वाइस एडमिरल करमबीर सिंह को नौसेना प्रमुख बनाया जा रहा है। 23 मार्च को वाइस एडमिरल करमबीर सिंह को नौसेना का अगला प्रमुख नियुक्त करने की घोषणा की गई थी। वर्तमान नौसेना प्रमुख एडमिरल सुनील लांबा मई के अंत में रिटायर हो रहे हैं। माना जा रहा है कि सरकार ने मेरिट के आधार पर यह चयन किया है। पद के लिए वरिष्ठतम अफसर की नियुक्ति वाली परंपरा नहीं अपनाई गई।

बिमल वर्मा इस समय अंडमान-निकोबार कमांड के वाइस एडिमरल पद पर तैनात हैं। यह नौसेना प्रमुख पद के दावेदारों में थे। ऐसा यह दूसरा मौका है जब वरीयता को ध्यान में नहीं रखा गया हैं । वाइस एडमिरल बिमल वर्मा ने याचिका में कहा है कि सरकार ने उनकी वरीयता को ध्यान में नहीं रखा। नौसेना में वाइस एडमिरल बिमल वर्मा का कार्यकाल सर्वाध‍िक लंबा है, लेकिन सरकार ने करमबीर सिंह को अगला नौसेना प्रमुख नियुक्त किया। यह दूसरा मौका है, जब केंद्र ने वरीयता की अनदेखी की है। इससे पहले 2016 में भी सरकार ने जनरल बिपिन रावत को सेना प्रमुख बनाया था।

वाइस एडमिरल करमबीर सिंह भारतीय नौसेना के 24वें प्रमुख होंगे। करमबीर सिंह नेशनल डिफेंस एकेडमी (एनडीए), खड़कवासला के पूर्व छात्र रहे हैं। वह जुलाई 1980 में भारतीय नौ सेना से जुड़े। एनडीए में आने से पहले उन्होंने महाराष्ट्र के बार्नेस स्कूल, देवलाली से स्नातक की शिक्षा हासिल की थी। मूल रूप से जालंधर के रहने वाले करमबीर सिंह की शिक्षा देश के कई शहरों में हुई क्योंकि उनके पिता खुद भारतीय वायुसेना (आईएएफ) थे और विंग कमांडर के रूप में सेवानिवृत्त हुए थे। अपने 37 साल के लंबे करियर में उन्हें कई प्रतिष्ठित पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। 2018 में उनके शानदार सेवा के लिए अति विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल (एवीएसएम) और परम विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल (पूवीएसएम) से नवाजा गया था।
