इस परियोजना को चलाने वाले क्लीन सी लाइव की समन्वयक एलोनोरा डी सबाटा ने कहा, ‘कई मछुआरे कूड़े को समुद्र में ही फेंक आते थे क्योंकि कानून के अनुसार वे इसे जमीन पर नहीं ला सकते थे।’ उन्होंने कहा, ‘उन्हें बंदरगाहों पर अपशिष्ट लाने का अधिकार नहीं है। इस प्रकार के अपशिष्ट को रखने की कोई जगह नहीं है और यह भी स्पष्ट नहीं है कि इसका निपटारा किसे करना चाहिए।’
अब ऐसी उम्मीद की जा रही है कि सैन बेनेडेटो डेल ट्रॉन्टो के एड्रियाटिक रिसॉर्ट के पास मछलियां पकड़ने वाली उन करीब 40 नौकाओं के सामने यह समस्या नहीं आएगी , जो इस पहल में भाग ले रही हैं। इस मुहिम की शुरुआत से अब तक मछुआरों ने एक महीने में प्रति सप्ताह करीब एक टन कूड़ा एकत्र किया जिसमें से 60 प्रतिशत प्लास्टिक है। इसमें से कुछ का रीसाइकल किया गया, कुछ का घरेलू या औद्योगिक अपशिष्ट के साथ निपटारा किया गया, लेकिन समुद्र में कूड़ा वापस नहीं फेंका गया।
